The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi is one of the top cricket grounds in the UAE. Built for about $23 million and opened in 2004, it was designed by Concor with a focus on comfort and space. The ground has two main stands and wide grass banks on the sides with a seating capacity of around 20,000.
The stadium became a major venue during the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, when Abu Dhabi hosted several important matches. Games from the first round, the Super 12 stage, and even a semi-final were played here. Aerial views of the stadium often show the modern design sitting right in the heart of the city.
The ground is also closely linked with the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 2014, when the first half of the IPL was shifted to the UAE, several matches were played at the Abu Dhabi cricket ground. Later, in 2020, the stadium hosted many games when the league fully took place in the UAE. In 2021, the second phase of the season was staged in the UAE with Abu Dhabi once again being one of the venues.
