Sanju Samson is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman who plays for the Indian national cricket team. He is known for his elegant strokeplay, flair and clean hitting, especially in the T20 format of the game. He is the current captain of the IPL team Rajasthan Royals and Kerala in domestic cricket. Samson is renowned for his explosive innings in T20, and consistently delivers clutch performances. As a captain, he has also shown maturity, calm temperament and displayed valuable leadership qualities.

Sanju Vishwanath Samson was born on 11 November 1994 in Pulluvila, Vizhinjam, which is a village near the capital of Kerala. He is currently 30 years of age and will be turning 31 in November as of 2025.
Samson is 5’7” in height (170 cm) who is a right-handed batsman who often plays as an explosive opener; and he is also an occasional wicketkeeper. Samson’s strokeplay is viewed as his great strength, along with his abilities to play lofted drives and flicks through the leg side. He can go aggressive when required and he can hit clean and effortless shots. He has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in T20 cricket, amassing a few tenacious records on his way.
Samson was born to a Malayali Christian family to Samson Vishwanath and Ligy Vishwanath. His father was a police constable in Delhi Police. He was also a retired football player who played for Delhi in the Santosh Trophy. His mother is a housewife. He has a brother, Saly Samson, who is elder to him and has played junior cricket for Kerala.
Samson showed an early passion in the sport. Coach Yashpal trained him at DL DAV Model school academy. He didn’t make it to the Delhi U-13 team for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy, unfortunately. That’s when his father took voluntary retirement from his job as the constable and returned to Kerala to support both his children’s cricketing dreams. There, he initially attended the Masters Cricket Club before switching to Biju George’s academy on Medical College Ground, Thiruvananthapuram.
During his early years, Samson studied at Rosary Senior Secondary School in Delhi, before moving to Kerala and switching to St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, from where he completed his graduation. His college degree was BA in English in Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Samson was called up for a spot in the India U-19 cricket team which participated in the 2012 ACC U-19 Asia Cup. He failed to deliver a promising performance so he was not selected for the 2012 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. However, after displaying strong performances for the U-19 team in other competitions, he was selected as a vice-captain of the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He delivered a stupendous performance, ending the tournament as the top scorer with a highest score of 85 off 45 balls.
Samson was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2012 season, but was on the bench for the entire tournament and did not play a single match. In the 2013 season, he was acquired by Rajasthan Royals and instantly became a hit. His IPL debut was against Kings XI Punjab on 14 April 2013. In his second ever IPL match, he smashed 63 off 41 balls which made him the then youngest player to score a half-century in IPL. This aided in his achievement of the 2013 Emerging Player of the Season.
He was picked up in 2016 by Delhi Daredevils since Rajasthan was banned for two seasons. In 2017, he scored his first-ever T20 century against Rising Pune Supergiants. In the very next season, he returned to Rajasthan Royals and scored his second IPL century against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the 2021 season, he was appointed as the captain of the Rajasthan Royals team where he scored a century in his debut as captain.
In 2022, he led Rajasthan Royals to the IPL final and became the all-time leading scorer for the team. He displayed amazing scoring figures consistently throughout the 2023 and 2024 season as well. He is also the only player to have scored more than 50 runs in the first match of the season for six consecutive years. His IPL journey is nothing short of amazing and he still captains the Rajasthan side.
Currently, Samson dons the #11 jersey while playing for Rajasthan Royals. He is their current captain and has been so since the 2021 season. He is a top order wicketkeeper batsman.
Samson made his T20I debut for the national team against Zimbabwe at Harare on July 19, 2015. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo on July 23, 2021. Even though he made his T20I debut in 2015, he failed to make a notable impact up until 2022 when he scored a 86* off 63 balls against South Africa but India still ended up losing the match.
Samson’s career’s highlight came when he faced Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series. He absolutely smashed 111 runs off 47 balls in the third match which made him the second-fastest Indian batsman to score a century in T20Is, the fastest wicketkeeper batsman to reach 50 against Bangladesh and he also achieved the highest individual score by an Indian batsman against Bangladesh in T20Is.
The very next match, in a series against South Africa, he scored yet another century which meant that he became the first Indian player to score two consecutive centuries in two matches. He also scored another century in the same series. This made him the player with the most centuries in a calendar year in T20Is with 3.
Samson married his girlfriend from college, Charulatha Remesh on 22 December 2018 at Kovalam, Kerala. They met during their time at college as classmates and dated each other around 5 years before tying the knot. Remesh works as an entrepreneur in Thiruvananthapuram. She isn’t very active on social media but often posts about her husband and shows her support for him during matches.
Samson is known to be deeply religious as a Christian and reads the Bible regularly. He is spiritual as well. He loves traveling and spending time in nature and often travels with his wife. He is also into tech, gaming and loves listening to music. He is also seen as humble and down to earth.
Samson is known as mentally tough and resilient with his leadership. He keeps his cool, even under pressure, and keeps a level head. His composed demeanor has helped Rajasthan Royals win matches and his decision-making is based on data and players first. His leadership qualities, albeit not enough to win the title yet, has helped his team reach the finals once and finish 3rd once - a testament to his cool-headed approach.
Samson suffered from a fracture to his right index finger when he was hit with a delivery from Jofra Archer in a match against England. This was in February 2025, which sidelined him for 4 to 6 weeks when he underwent surgery.
He missed out on the Ranji Trophy quarter-final. He also wasn’t cleared for his wicketkeeping duties for Rajasthan Royals in the first three matches of the season but he was cleared for it from the fourth match onwards. In April 2025, he retired hurt in a match against Delhi Capitals while batting, due to an abdominal side strain. Other than that, Samson hasn’t been too injury prone, which is a great boon for any sportsperson.
Sanju Samson’s net worth, as of mid-2025, is estimated to be somewhere around Rs 75-82 crore. His IPL salary is estimated to be around Rs 18 crore a year, which makes up a huge chunk of his net worth. He holds a BCCI Grade C contract which nets him an annual salary of Rs 1 crore. His brand collaborations and endorsements earn him around Rs 25 lakh or so per deal. Other assets include an expansive car collection and a luxury home and other properties, all which add to his net worth.
