Indian captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, following rumors regarding his future as captain in the longer format. Although he was confident about leading India on the upcoming tour of England, he has decided to step down from Test cricket.
Rohit Sharma has been an outstanding opening batsman for India, consistently performing well in the top order. He played a pivotal role in India’s previous tour of England and holds the best overseas record as an opener for India in that country.

Rohit Sharma Reigns as Captain
After Virat Kohli resigned, Rohit took over the captaincy in the longer format and led India to their second World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. He had a successful tenure as captain before 2024.
However, Rohit Sharma's form deteriorated significantly last year, starting from the home series against New Zealand. His poor performance contributed to India's first home series loss in eight years, as India was swept 0-3 by New Zealand for the first time at home. Following this, Rohit’s captaincy came under scrutiny, especially as his batting form did not match the demands of the situation.
Despite this, he led India in Australia, focusing on retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but they lost that series 3-1, resulting in India's failure to qualify for the WTC finals. Unfortunately, Rohit’s struggles continued during this series.

Rohit Announces Retirement Through Instagram
Despite the heavy losses, Rohit Sharma did not announce his retirement at that time, expressing confidence in making a strong comeback on the England tour. In a recent podcast with Michael Clarke, he assured fans that he would perform well and expected his teammates to put in more effort to win the series in England.

Sadly, Rohit Sharma did not end his Test career on a high note. In an announcement made via Instagram, he shared with fans that he will continue to represent India in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).
