So far, India has hardly put a foot wrong in the ongoing second Test against England in Edgbaston. With the bat in hand, the visitors scored 587 runs on the back of a sparkling 269 from skipper Shubman Gill. And with the ball in hand, India has already picked up five wickets, with the hosts still needing over 300 to take a first-innings lead.

It is fair to say India is bossing the game and now needs to show ruthlessness to drive the game forward and make the series 1-1. Currently, England has posted 249 runs and needs to reach 387 runs to avoid follow-on. While a lot of teams do not enforce the follow-on, irrespective of whether the teams have avoided it or not, England still has an uphill task to reach 387, with only five wickets in hand.

What happens if England fail to score 387 runs?

If England are bundled out below 387 runs, then the visitors have two options - one to enforce the follow-on, or the second, to bat again and pile on more agony on the visitors. With England ready to challenge any score thrown at them in the fourth innings, it will be only wise for India to bat the visitors out of the game by setting a huge score on the board.

The Shubman Gill-led side let a huge opportunity slip away by not posting a huge fourth innings total, as England easily chased 371. This time the visitors would be sure to not repeat the same mistakes.
