ENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 2 Highlights: Shubman Gill's Double Century Leaves England Reeling

India dominated Day 2 of the second Test versus England at Edgbaston, reaching a massive first-innings total of 587 runs. The highlight was skipper Shubman Gill’s masterclass as he amassed a majestic 269, the highest Test score ever by an Indian in England in a Test innings.

Gill was brilliantly supported by Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42), who helped stitch together formidable partnerships that blew the England bowlers away. On a flat Edgbaston pitch, England struggled to make early breakthroughs with Shoaib Bashir (3), Josh Tongue (2), Chris Woakes (2), Brydon Carse (1), Ben Stokes (1) and Joe Root (1) sharing the wickets.

When India’s innings finally wrapped up, England began their reply shakily. The new-ball pair of Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj rocked the top-order, reducing England to 25/3. The hosts ended the Day at 77/3.

Shubman Gill Smashes Historic Double Century

On a day where batting brilliance met ruthless pace, India took firm control of the second Test at Edgbaston. Leading from the front, Shubman Gill produced a monumental knock of 269 runs, etching his name in the record books with the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket history, breaking Virat Kohli's record of 254 runs. He also became the first Asian captain to score a double-century in England.

India began Day 2 at 310/5 with Gill well set and Jadeja looking fluent. The duo batted with authority through the first session. Jadeja missed out on a deserved century, falling for 89 at the stroke of lunch. His 203-run stand with Gill kept India in full command.

Gill remained the fulcrum of the innings and brought up his maiden double-century in Test cricket.

India’s lower-order chipped in with handy runs as well. Washington Sundar added 42 runs and formed a 144-run partnership for the seventh-wicket with Gill. India’s strategy to add extra batting depth seems to have worked. That pushed the total to a daunting 587 runs.

Bashir was England’s most successful bowler. He claimed 3/167, while Tongue and Woakes picked up two wickets apiece. But the day belonged to Gill, whose double-hundred knocked the wind out of England’s sails.

India’s Pacers Pile on the Pressure

If England thought their troubles were over after the long grind in the field, they were in for a shock. With the new ball in hand, India’s pace duo of Akash Deep and Siraj came charging in with purpose and results followed almost immediately.

Akash Deep struck in his second over, dismissing both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for golden ducks on successive deliveries, sending the Edgbaston crowd into stunned silence. Siraj then joined the party by removing Zak Crawley for 19, caught in the first slip while attempting to punch the ball away from his body.

England were reduced to 25/3, facing a mountain of pressure. Joe Root and Harry Brook survived the rest of the session. England ended the day at 77/3 with Root and Brook batting on 18 and 30 runs respectively. India currently lead by 510 runs.
