Summary

BCCI to hold professional talks with Kohli and Rohit over potential ODI retirement plans ahead of 2027 World Cup.

ENG vs IND: Kapil Dev Slams Obsession with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

The young squad that played in England, leveling the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at 2-2, might have triggered the BCCI to rethink Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s extension in the ODI team until the 2027 World Cup.

Shubman Gill’s men have made history and made names for themselves in England after securing a memorable series draw, especially when many anticipated that this team would collapse badly overseas. The young squad wonderfully answered the critics, complemented by their never-give-up attitude.

BCCI to Discuss ODI Future with Kohli and Rohit Ahead of 2027

Meanwhile, the veterans and long-serving men in blue, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have already retired from T20Is and Tests, are now playing only one format: ODIs. Both are focused on continuing until the 2027 World Cup, aiming to retire with another trophy, just as they did after the T20 World Cup in 2024.

However, the BCCI and its officials are thinking otherwise, as they begin to shift focus toward the young squad and build a team around them for the next big event. The board is reportedly not backing the veterans to continue till the 2027 World Cup. In light of this, the BCCI has taken steps to clarify the intentions of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, looking forward for the future as they plan to initiate a professional conversation with the duo.

“Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Kohli and Rohit’s ODI Futures Hinged on Form and Fitness

Rohit and Kohli have had phenomenal ODI careers, amassing 11,168 and 14,181 runs respectively. Rohit averages 49.12 with 31 centuries, while Kohli boasts an average of 58.67 with 50 centuries. Both have achieved almost everything in this format. However, the board feels this could be the right time for a discussion while also clarifying that they’re not pushing them to retire. According to reports, it depends purely on their physical and mental strength.

"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white-ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don’t think anybody’s going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts, to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that,” he concluded.
